Joe Manchin Urges President Biden to Exit 2024 Race

In a significant political move, Independent Sen. Joe Manchin has called on President Joe Biden to step aside in the 2024 race against former President Donald Trump. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Manchin expressed that it's time for a new generation to take the helm.

“I came to the decision with a heavy heart that I think it’s time to pass the torch to a new generation,” stated Manchin.

The West Virginia senator, who registered as an independent in May but continues to caucus with Democrats, also advocated for an open nomination process. He suggested Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear as potential candidates, contrasting with those who consider Vice President Kamala Harris the frontrunner.

While making his media rounds on Sunday, Manchin reiterated his belief in Biden's mental acuity to complete his current term. He also mentioned that Biden's team was aware of his call for a new nominee.

Pressure has been mounting on Biden to withdraw his reelection bid since his June debate against Trump. Alongside Manchin, at least 36 Democratic lawmakers, including four senators, have urged Biden to allow a new nominee to lead the ticket.

Manchin has been hinting at his declining support for Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee. Last week, following an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally, Manchin condemned political violence and acknowledged the Democratic Party's vulnerabilities with Biden leading the ticket.

“At a time when the Democratic Party must realize they risk losing the Senate and even the House, in addition to the presidency, they are doing nothing to broaden the tent and appeal to more Americans,” Manchin wrote last Sunday.

He further criticized the unwavering support for Biden despite his debate performance, highlighting the far left's control over the current administration.

Throughout Biden's administration, Manchin has often positioned himself as a conservative Democrat, occasionally opposing significant parts of the president's agenda. Earlier in the election cycle, Manchin seemed to consider an independent bid for the White House. However, in February, he quashed these speculations by announcing he would not launch a third-party campaign and would not seek Senate reelection, leaving his seat open in a predominantly red state.
