Bob Newhart Tribute Special Draws Record 4.1 Million Viewers on CBS

CBS's tribute to the legendary comedian Bob Newhart, titled “Bob Newhart: A Legacy of Laughter,” captivated 4.1 million viewers on Monday night. The “Entertainment Tonight” special celebrated Newhart's extraordinary 70-year career in comedy following his recent passing at age 94. This made the special the most-watched program in its 8 p.m. timeslot, outperforming competing shows such as NBC's “American Ninja Warrior” (2.7 million viewers), ABC's “The Bachelorette” (2.6 million viewers), Fox's “Name That Tune” (1.4 million viewers), and CW's “All American: Homecoming” (322,000 viewers). In addition to being the top-rated show of the night, excluding sports telecasts, “Bob Newhart: A Legacy of Laughter” also became the highest-viewed “Entertainment Tonight” special ever. The previous record-holder was “NCISVerse: The First 1000,” which attracted 3.8 million viewers in April. Other notable ET specials include “Salute to NCIS: LA” with 3.4 million viewers in May 20

Melania Trump Makes Rare Appearance at RNC: A Show of Unity

Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump made notable appearances at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, supporting former President Donald Trump’s third bid for the presidency.

Unlike the 2016 and 2020 campaigns, both Melania and Ivanka have largely stayed away from the campaign trail this year. Neither delivered speeches at the convention, marking a distinct change in their public involvement.

Melania Trump’s Symbolic Presence

Melania Trump’s attendance at the RNC serves as a powerful symbol of unity within the Republican Party, especially following a recent attempt on Donald Trump’s life. Shortly after the incident, Melania urged Americans to “ascend above hate, vitriol, and simple-minded ideas that ignite violence” in a heartfelt statement.

Campaigns often rely on family members to humanize the candidate. However, with Melania taking a step back this year, this role fell to other speakers who shared personal anecdotes about Trump. His 17-year-old granddaughter, Kai Trump, affectionately described him as “just a normal grandfather.”

A Grand Entrance

Melania made a grand entrance, smiling and waving as she walked into the arena. She wore a striking red skirt suit and took her seat next to vice-presidential nominee JD Vance while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 played in the background.

During his speech, Donald Trump acknowledged Melania, expressing gratitude for her support and highlighting her plea for unity following the recent attack.

Family Support

Melania later joined Trump on stage, catching him by surprise as she whispered in his ear after his 93-minute speech. The Trump family, including his younger grandchildren, then joined them on stage as balloons fell from the ceiling—a hallmark of political conventions. Melania stood by Trump’s side, showing quiet affection and occasionally chatting with JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance.

The Trump Family’s Role

Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, along with their partners Kimberly Guilfoyle and Lara Trump, addressed the delegates this week. However, Tiffany Trump and her husband, Michael Boulos, attended without speaking. The president’s youngest son, Barron Trump, did not appear at the convention, having declined an invitation to be a Florida delegate.

Ivanka Trump’s Absence

Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, who held senior roles in Donald Trump’s White House, did not attend the convention. Ivanka previously stated her intent to support her father from outside the political arena.

This year’s RNC highlighted a different dynamic within the Trump family, with Melania and Ivanka taking more reserved roles while still symbolizing strong support for Donald Trump’s presidential ambitions.
