Andy Murray's Wimbledon Journey: Doubles Defeat Marks Start of Farewell
Andy Murray's anticipated farewell at Wimbledon began on a challenging note as he and his brother Jamie faced an early exit in the men's doubles. The Murray brothers were defeated in the first round by the Australian duo Rinky Hijikata and John Peers with a scoreline of 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Struggling with Injury
Andy Murray, limited by back pain, relied heavily on his service game throughout the match. The two-time Wimbledon singles champion had previously withdrawn from his first-round singles match due to not fully recovering from a spinal cyst procedure, which affected the sensation in his right leg.
Emotional Return to Centre Court
Despite his physical limitations, Murray's participation in the doubles alongside his brother generated significant excitement at the All England Club. The British duo received a standing ovation as they walked onto Centre Court, marking the first men's doubles opening-round match on the main show court since 1995.
Match Highlights
The Murrays started strong, with Andy delivering a fierce drive down the middle to win the first game. However, he was soon seen stretching his back between points, wincing in pain. The brothers almost secured the first break in the fifth game but were thwarted by the Australians.
A tiebreak was needed to decide the first set, with the Murrays holding a 6-5 lead. However, Hijikata’s forehand and volley down the middle turned the tide, putting the Australians ahead. Jamie Murray, a two-time doubles Grand Slam champion, managed to break serve with a decisive volley, but the Australians quickly broke back, sealing the set and ultimately the match.
Reflecting on the Match
In an interview with the BBC, Andy Murray expressed the significance of playing doubles with his brother, stating, "Yeah, it was obviously really special. We never got the chance to do it before. There was a chance this year."
Looking Ahead
Andy Murray is set to play again in the mixed doubles competition, teaming up with fellow Brit Emma Raducanu. The pair received a wild-card entry, and their matches are scheduled to begin on Friday.
While Murray has announced his plans to retire this summer, he intends to make his final professional appearance at the Paris Olympics later this month at Roland Garros.
