Josh Shapiro: A Top Contender for Vice President – What He Brings to the Ticket
As speculation increased about President Joe Biden potentially exiting the presidential race, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emerged as a strong contender for the vice-presidential slot alongside Kamala Harris.
Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the race, throwing his support behind Harris as the Democratic nominee. This development has intensified the focus on Shapiro and other potential running mates. The final decision will be made at the Democratic convention in Chicago next month.
The Washington Post reported that Shapiro is among several candidates being vetted, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. Shapiro's key advantage is his ability to secure crucial electoral votes from Pennsylvania.
Shapiro, a Georgetown Law graduate, won the governorship in 2022 by a significant margin, defeating state Sen. Doug Mastriano. His tenure as the state attorney general and representative from Montgomery County bolsters his political experience. Shapiro gained national recognition for his leadership during the I-95 overpass collapse in June 2023, earning praise across party lines.
Political analyst Chris Borick highlighted Shapiro’s appeal, emphasizing Pennsylvania’s pivotal role in electoral politics. Shapiro’s popularity in this swing state gives him a competitive edge over governors from less critical states like Kentucky and North Carolina.
Shapiro’s relatively brief tenure as governor might not be a significant drawback. His work as attorney general, particularly his investigation into sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church, showcases his longstanding engagement with critical issues.
Political strategist Samuel Chen noted that while Shapiro’s resume could be both an asset and a liability, his moments in the national spotlight and his achievements might mitigate concerns about his limited time in office. Shapiro’s Jewish heritage could also help attract votes from disaffected Jewish voters.
If Shapiro were to leave office before his term ended, Lt. Gov. Austin Davis would assume the governorship, with Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward becoming lieutenant governor.
Following Biden's announcement, Shapiro expressed his support for Harris, emphasizing the need for unity within the Democratic Party to secure a victory in November. He pledged his commitment to helping Harris win the presidency, highlighting Pennsylvania's crucial role in the election.
