Former US Sen. Jim Inhofe, Defense Advocate and Climate Change Skeptic, Passes Away at 89

 Former US Senator Jim Inhofe, a staunch advocate for defense spending and a vocal skeptic of human-caused climate change, passed away at the age of 89. Inhofe, a significant figure in Oklahoma politics for over six decades, died following a stroke during the July Fourth holiday, his family announced.

Inhofe's political journey was marked by his conservative values and his firm stance against mainstream scientific consensus on climate change. He once famously referred to the idea that human activity significantly impacts the Earth's climate as "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people." In 2015, he brought a snowball onto the Senate floor during a cold spell in Washington, D.C., to mock the notion of global warming.

Throughout his tenure, Inhofe was a robust supporter of Oklahoma’s military installations and an advocate for congressional earmarks. An Army veteran and licensed pilot, he secured federal funds for local infrastructure projects and criticized attempts to halt earmark spending. His efforts in securing these funds significantly benefited Oklahoma’s development.

Inhofe's political career began in the Oklahoma state legislature before he became Tulsa's mayor in 1978. He then served in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1980s before winning a U.S. Senate seat in 1994. He was reelected five times, showcasing his strong influence and popularity in his home state.

In 2013, Inhofe underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery but continued to serve, winning his fifth Senate term in 2020. He stepped down in early 2023, marking the end of a distinguished career in public service.
