Bob Newhart Tribute Special Draws Record 4.1 Million Viewers on CBS

 CBS's tribute to the legendary comedian Bob Newhart, titled “Bob Newhart: A Legacy of Laughter,” captivated 4.1 million viewers on Monday night. The “Entertainment Tonight” special celebrated Newhart's extraordinary 70-year career in comedy following his recent passing at age 94. This made the special the most-watched program in its 8 p.m. timeslot, outperforming competing shows such as NBC's “American Ninja Warrior” (2.7 million viewers), ABC's “The Bachelorette” (2.6 million viewers), Fox's “Name That Tune” (1.4 million viewers), and CW's “All American: Homecoming” (322,000 viewers). In addition to being the top-rated show of the night, excluding sports telecasts, “Bob Newhart: A Legacy of Laughter” also became the highest-viewed “Entertainment Tonight” special ever.  Joe Bonsall, a cornerstone of the iconic Oak Ridge Boys, passed away at 76 due to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Bonsall's remarkable journey with the group began in 1973, and he became known for his vibrant tenor voice and dynamic stage presence.

A Celebrated Career

Bonsall's influence in country music was undeniable. The Oak Ridge Boys saw monumental success with hits like "Elvira," which topped the country charts and crossed over to reach No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Other significant tracks include "Bobbie Sue," "Trying to Love Two Women," and "No Matter How High." Over the years, the band achieved 17 No. 1 country songs and 34 top 10 hits.


Recognition and Contributions

The Oak Ridge Boys were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Bonsall's contributions to the group were widely acknowledged. Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, praised Bonsall for his high, clear tenor voice and his ability to energize audiences.

Life Beyond Music

Beyond his musical career, Bonsall was an accomplished author, having written 11 books, including a memoir scheduled for publication this November. He faced significant health challenges, including a near-fatal encounter with pulmonary embolisms in 2022, yet continued to contribute to the group's farewell tour until his retirement from touring in January 2023.


Final Farewell

Joe Bonsall is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, daughters Jennifer and Sabrina, and several grandchildren. In lieu of a funeral, the family requests donations to the ALS Association or Vanderbilt Medical Center ALS and Neuroscience Research Center.
