Unlocking Early College Success: How High School Students Are Getting Ahead with AP Scores and Alternative Programs

As AP exam scores release today, high school students nationwide are feeling the pressure. The stakes are high as these young scholars strategically lay the groundwork for their academic and professional futures.

AP Scores

Advanced Placement (AP) Program: A Gateway to College Credit

The AP program, established in 1952, allows high school students to take college-level courses and exams. Traditionally aimed at juniors and seniors, some ambitious freshmen and sophomores also participate. These students undergo rigorous three-hour exams in May, with scores released in early July. Success in these exams can translate to fulfilling college general education requirements.

Bryce Anderson, a University of Washington student, credits AP classes for his smooth college transition. "I came in with 70 credits from AP, which covered most of my general education requirements," he said, allowing him the freedom to explore various classes in his first year.

However, the availability of AP courses varies. Smaller schools often lack the resources to offer a broad range of AP classes, making programs like dual enrollment with community colleges a vital alternative.

Weighted GPA and College Admissions

AP classes can also boost a student's GPA. In Spokane Public Schools, AP courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale, unlike honors classes, which use a 4.5 scale. This incentive sometimes leads to students enrolling in AP classes primarily for GPA boosts, even if they don't take the corresponding exams.

Other Pathways to College Credit: Running Start and IB Programs

Running Start offers another path, allowing high school juniors and seniors to take college classes directly. This program appeals to students like Kate Guier, who finds it more manageable than AP classes. "It’s the same type of work but less pressure to get credit," she said.

Running Start students can earn both high school and college credits, often pursuing an Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement, which facilitates smooth transitions to four-year universities. This dual credit system helps students like Guier expedite their college education, potentially earning a bachelor’s degree in less time.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is another rigorous option, recognized globally for its comprehensive and holistic approach. Saint George's School in Spokane offers a full IB program, preparing students not only academically but also as global citizens.

NEWtech: Hands-On Career Preparation

For students seeking practical, hands-on experience, NEWtech provides career and technical education. This program targets students who may not fit the traditional academic mold, offering training in fields like cosmetology and welding. Patrick Lenihan, assistant director at NEWtech, emphasizes the importance of real-world skills and certifications that students can earn alongside their high school diplomas.

Choosing the Right Path

Each program—AP, Running Start, IB, and NEWtech—offers unique benefits tailored to different student needs and goals. Guillermo Espinosa, associate dean at Spokane Community College, encourages students to take charge of their education. "You are driving the bus," he said, highlighting the importance of personal responsibility and proactive decision-making.

Whether through advanced coursework, dual enrollment, or hands-on training, high school students have various avenues to prepare for college and beyond. By exploring these options, they can find the best fit for their aspirations and set themselves up for future success.
